Non-Surgical Skin Tightening

Introduction – Non-Surgical Skin Tightening

Skin tightening can be done by using radiofrequency or a device. Both these methods may be considered as non-surgical. Various radiofrequency devices as well as pulsed light devices are available. Some devices combine the effects of radiofrequency and light energy.

Radiofrequency (RF) works in similar way as the microwave oven which reheats the food. RF energy acts on the tissue to induce heat. The goal of the method is to control the heating to the level just enough to stimulate adequate tightening of the tissues. RF energy can affect tissue differently in different patients.

Pulsed light treatments can work in 2 ways. It converts light to heat up the tissues (similar to the sun warming the skin) and also by stimulating the repair of cells in the skin.

Non-surgical skin tightening devices have minimal recovery time and full activity may be resumed on the same day of procedure.
Compared to other skin tightening treatments, the major difference for light and RF is that there is no damage to the epidermis or outer skin layer in any manner but these treatments can heat the deeper skin layers during the session. These therapies activate the body’s natural wound healing response and then causechanges in collagen of the skin, which results in skin tightening. A series or repeated sessions of these treatments is usually performed.

The doctor or surgeon decides whether the patient is a good candidate for these treatments. The different devices have different criteria to ensure the safety. Treatment may be done either by the doctor or a technician on his staff.

The area of the skin to be treated is thoroughly cleaned of makeup and skin lotions. Some treatments even require a thin coat of ultrasound gel to be applied during treatment. Premedication may be required for some patients depending upon device, treatment area, and the individual needs. Some devices may need intravenous sedation. Treatment may take anywhere from several minutes to one hour to complete.
